Q: What do you recommend using as the grow medium for planting?
R: I'm using peat moss plugs! Rockwool can also work well. Ideally, you want something that will stay together and won't disintegrate in the water.
Q: Is it possible to upgrade my tower later on by adding modules or lights?
R: Yes! If you purchased a small tower or a tower without lights you can add extra modules and lights very easily. Send me a message and let me know what you need!
Q: How much power does the tower consume?
R: The water pump is 25 watts and the lights are 20 watts each. The small tower uses 3 lights and the large 6. Considering a large tower where both pump and lights are on a timer, it will need 1540 watts every day. With an average price per kWh of 15 cents in North America, the large tower costs 23 cents every day, $7 per month, and $84 per year.
Q: What seeds can I use with this system?
R: Any seeds can be used with my system, however practically speaking I would recommend leafy greens, fine herbs, and compact varieties of fruits and vegetables.
Q: Where can I find hydroponic nutrients?
R: Hydroponic nutrients are very easy to find. Look on amazon, hydroponic websites, or your local gardening supply store!
Q: Can I use my tower outside?
R: I don't recommend bringing your hydroponic tower outside as the plastic I am using is not very heat resistant. However, I will be testing the towers in the sun next summer so stay tuned for updates!
